hi guys,
we just got done watching this way cool movie I just had to write you about. It’s called Nim’s Island and it is taken from a children’s book. I have not read it yet, but after seeing this I think ill look for it and pick it up. the movie is really good, and i think everyone would like it no matter what age you are.
The whole movie is about this girl named Nim. She lives on this island out in the middle of the ocean with her father and animals that live on the island. her father is a marine type scientist who is looking for different organisms that live in the ocean. he also does work for national geographic and stuff.
Nim’s mom was a scientist too, but she died in a boating accident when a ship got too close to a whale she was studying. That part was sad. But Nim grew up with her dad on the island, and together they have lived and Nim has learned a lot of stuff from the animals and different things on the island. she has become very smart and is able to do things on her own, cooking, cleaning and other things. one thing she loves to do is read adventure stories, and gets books from a supply ship that sails out to them every month with food, and mail, and other things. her all time favorite books are about a adventurer named Alex. he is like a indiana jones type of guy who always is getting in trouble, but manages to work his way out of it in the end. in the movie, and this part was cool; she is reading about his latest adventure and everything around her drops away and she becomes right in the center of all the action that is taking place in the book as she is reading.
one day her father sets out in their sailboat and tells her he will be back in two days. he has found a place in the ocean that has this organism that he has been searching for all these years. Nim has never been on her own for this long, but she tells her dad that she will be fine and not to worry.
she writes on her computer to the character she has been reading about, this Alex. and he has been writing back to her. so all this time she thinks this is a real guy writing about his real adventures.
but with all good stories, things aren’t always as it seems……….
next we meet the real life Alex, the author who is really writing the story. her name is Alexandria, played by Jodie Foster. (ok a little spoiler, but you’ll figure that out first thing anyway ) the real life alex is one of those people that can’t stand anything that’s not clean, takes a lot of medicine, and she HATES going outside her own house. even to get the mail from the mailbox, she only goes out when she has too. otherwise she stays indoors and writes her book. oh and she talks to her character, yeps she talks to Alex as a real person. she gets stuck writing at one point and reads Nim’s suggestion on how to continue the story in her last book. they talk back and forth though emails, all this time Nim is thinking this is that guy Alex from the books!
Nim’s father gets caught out in a storm at sea. and his boat gets the sail knocked off of it. so he is stuck out in the middle of no where, trying his best to get back to Nim.
Nim is really worried about her dad, and in helping Alex write her book she decides to go exploring the island. she falls at one point and then sees these men come a shore.
scared, hurt and all alone what can Nim do? Well when you need a hero you got to call on one right??? hehe. she asks Alex the hero to please come to the island, find her dad and help save the day. Who is the real Alex again? oh yea a woman who never leaves her house and talks to herself. yeps.
the rest of the movie is how alex goes on a great adventure trying to save Nim and her dad trying to get back to the island. it’s funny in places, scary, and a little sad too.
well Alex over come her fears and make it to a island only Nim and her dad know about? will her dad be okay and make it back to her safely? and what’s with the sailors who came a shore?? what’s that all about?
well all i can say is go out and rent this movie and watch it with your kids! it’s one of the best dvds we have seen and for sure it’s going be on my shelf. i think you will like it. I give it two thumbs up anyways, hehehe.
