I posted on my journal about working up at the hobby shop. so dad said go a head and send it to you too. because maybe some people that listen might have kids old enough to work summer jobs and stuff. so here you go:

hi hi,
yeps. i am working, well kinda sorta. my uncle dave has a bunch of hobby shops here in st louis. the one here is right down our street, i can ride my bike to it. i been helping there clean the store and waiting on people that come in and helping with setting up tables for games and stuff. so uncle dave said, hey you want to learn what we do here? and i was like SURE!!! so dad said maybe this would be a cool thing to post about.

Well first thing to talk about is the first day of work, everyone has to go though this so i had some good advice for you guys. because sooner or later you will get a summer job somewhere.

first thing you need to do on any job is listen. listen close to the person teaching you stuff but really listen to the customers. best part of working up at the hobby shop is learning about new comics or about games you’ve seen but never have played before. I even learned about some anime and movies too!! the city where we live has a huge college, called lindenwood. so most of the people that come into the hobby shop are college people. they play LOTS of games. and most of them are real cool to talk to.

the other thing to remember in a job is to be careful. youre not at home, and this is a job so you got to watch what you are doing close. in my job i have to check people out and run the cash register. its kinda hard, but all the stuff have bar codes on it. so i have to watch when i scan stuff to make sure what comes up, is what is on the sticker. i talk a lot and sometimes i forget, so that’s something i have to work on.

the last thing is pick a job that you are going to like. if you like it, you will enjoy being there, it’s that simple! I know lots of older kids and they always say i hate my job cause of this, and because of that. and seems to me they just got the job for the money. well money is cool and stuff, but wow if you hate what you do; why do it? no wonder people are so unhappy.

oh one more thing. sometimes you are going want to quite your job. sometimes thing don’t work out or whatever. dad says to do this then, always let them know what you are wanting to do and why. sometimes you can work things out and not have to work. also, when you try to get another job, you are going to want you old job to say oh yea she was a good worker and stuff.

anyway thats my advice. I really love working up at the shop, it’s a lot of fun and sometimes i get to play the games too. unless we get busy and stuff. summer jobs can be fun, and it helps your folks too! because you can have your own money to spend. Yea i know most of you guys are too young to even think about this yet, but maybe later when you get older it will help? hope so.

Feels great to earn your own money and to know you can handle yourself at work, doesn’t it?!

    Well done.
