Now that I've finished the last 5 minutes of the podcast, I have to agree with you regarding the term "geek." I too believe it has positive connotations; however, most of my students would disagree.

Also, by itself, I think the term has a technology and scifi bent, but with qualifiers "geek" has a more general definition: e.g. book geek, sewing geek, movie geek, knitting geek, scrapping geek... no technology or scifi implied.

I agree with your definition of nerd, and I've always felt "nerd" to have negative connotations. I'm proud to be a geek, but a little sensitive about being labeled a geek.

If I can find the recording, I'll boil it down to an MP3 and send it along unedited. :)

Susie,

Thanks for the recommendation for Castle Keep. My son is 5, in Kindergarten, and he and your son have a lot in common, A LOT IN COMMON. We've been trying to get him into board games, so I think we'll give this one a try. Aidan did use some Christmas money to buy Hungry Hungry Hippos, and that's been a big hit from time to time. However, like your son, he HATES to loose, and it's been difficult to get him past that. As a matter of fact, Aidan also got the Clone Wars lightsaber game, and we can't get him to play it because he's gotten very upset when he's lost.

Aidan and I actually recorded a message for you about Halloween, but I never had a chance to edit it, and it's a bit late now, so I haven't passed it on.

Geek: I think geeks are people who enjoy technology as a bit more than a hobby, more of a fascination as well as a tool and a source of entertainment. I think true Geeks enjoy reading, although not necessarily books, and their interests include a variety of things but also move toward SciFi and Fantasy.

Thanks for the show.

My best to you,
Rob
