HTGYG Show #29: Not All Animation Is For Kids!

Hi everone! We begin with a voicemail from Tim commenting on women heroes, and how Col. Samantha Carter was so smart she even rescued MacGyver! Darcy picked out these women heroes, and I have to say I agree with her choice!

Then I talked about being aware that not all animation is for kids. Be it books, movies, games or television, you as parents and adults should be aware of the content, and know if it is appropriate for the kids to have.

I recommended the Miyazaki films Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro (and I forgot to mention Kiki’s Delivery Service) for kids, and the Girl Genius graphic novels for teens – one of Darcy’s faves!

Thanks for all the input, and keep it coming! And, if you have some time, I would appreciate a review on iTunes!

David reports on some new healthier products in stores!

David wrote in to give us some new products that are healthier alternatives to snacks. He went down the ice cream aisle and made note of what different companies are calling the same thing.  These products have either 1/2 fat or added bacteria or both to aid digestion.

Breyer’s Smooth and Dreamy (with new packaging)

Hood Churned frozen yogurt with Live and Active Cultures

Turkey Hill Cold Churned with Live and Active Cultures

Friendly’s Smooth and Churned

Stop and Shop (a store brand where I am) Churn Style

Edy’s Slow Churned Yogurt Blends with Live and Active Cultures

David also found  Kraft Live Active cheese.
http://brands.kraftfoods.com/liveactivefoods/products/products.aspx?cheeseSnacks

He also found that Tropicana has a OJ that has half of the sugar removed from it.  Less sugar = less calories, thumbs up. However, he reports that it does not taste like OJ.
Tropicana just did a packaging redesign and the OJ is now “Trop 50″ in the blue font.

Hugo Nominations List

Congrats to all of you!

Darcy reviews “Race to Witch Mountain”

Hi guys,
Yeps another review so soon, hehe. I been trying to do more stuff on here, I am thinking of doing a lot actually, so keep looking here. Going to start putting important things, and also some more cool stuff. It won’t all be reviews, going be about life and stuff.

Anyways…..

We went to see this over the weekend. And I liked it, well some of it. So I decided i’d share it with you and tell what I thought was the good parts and bad parts. And let you decide on whether to see it or not. I think that’s really what a review should do, not like a yahoo review where they say, that sucked; and then not say why or it will be they didnt like it because it wasn’t what they thought it was going to be. Dad says for me to be open and honest and let people make up their own minds. So here goes:

Race to witch mountain isn’t a remake of the orginal movie, which I never seen. This is a retelling of that story. The movie starts with news and articles about UFO sightings from all over the world. Plus there are a couple places where Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton give speeches on them, (which was kinda cool.) Then we get into the movie itself.

Jack Bruno (yeah, i know,) played by the Rock; is a ex con taxi driver struggling to make ends meet. He is highly in dept and has some people that he owes money to looking for him, The last thing he needs is more trouble. He lives in a hotel in Las Vegas where there is a Sci Fi convention and a UFO convention going at the same time. The very first fare he gets are two geeks dressed as storm troopers, which was pretty funny.

Darcy reviews “Eulaliah”, a Redwall novel

“Lord Asheye of Salamandastron has a prophecy: a new Badger Lord will
soon reign over the legendary badger fortress, one who ‘shuns armour
and sword’. But who is this young beast and how is he to be found?

A haremaid from the Long Patrol regiment is dispatched on a dangerous
mission to find him, but the unsuspecting future Badger Lord has been
captured by a murderous gang of Sea Raiders who are intent on
conquering Redwall Abbey.

While the fate of many creatures, both good and evil, are caught up in
the saga, somehow the young ruler must escape and find a way to defend
Redwall, for only then will he be able to fulfill his destiny as
leader of Salamandastron.”

This is the story behind the lastest book in the Redwall series of
books. And what I think is one of the best. it’s has action, drama,
three plot threads, (hehe, been learning the talk from Mr.
Stackpoole.) that come together in a very exciting book and very well
told tale.

But……Let’s start at the begining. [Read more...]

David reviews “The Red Balloon”

The Red Balloon
French, Animated 1956
34 minutes
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048980/

The movie opens with a little boy around eight going to school.  On the way he passes by a large red balloon tied to a lamppost.  Presumably, this balloon belongs to the people who live in the apartment the lamppost is connected to.
They are not watching right this minute, so the balloon is up for grabs.  He shimmies up the post and unties the balloon and climbs down, showing poor hygiene by putting the dirty rope between his teeth.

He walks down the sidewalk, bothering other people who have to deal with this balloon swinging side to side in the breeze.  The boy is not allowed on the trolley because of the large balloon.  The greedy boy keeps the balloon and runs to school.

The town the boy is in is not as bleak as, say Russia in “Winged Migration,” but is very colorless.

At school he hands off the balloon to the groundskeeper, it is not as if the guy has anything else to do is it?  [Read more...]

HTGYG Show #27: Interview with Jack and Theresa

This week, I am interviewed by Jack and Theresa Jaffee from The Jack and Theresa Show, about how to age-appropriately handle sci-fi, fantasy and games for kids. They generously allowed me to use the interview here as well!

We also have a voicemail from Tim with a useful download for limiting the terms that kids can search the Internet for, and I have some cool new bumpers from some of my podcasting friends.

Thanks for all the input, and keep it coming! And, if you have some time, I would appreciate a review on iTunes!

Over on the Farpoint forums, Chris the Fixed Kitty wrote about girls and women role in the media. And how the media has it all wrong. And I agree, she’s totally right.

Here is what she wrote:

1. Only cute/sexy gals will be the hero’s girlfriend, heroine, or villain. Not cute or sexy? Doomed to obscurity, pathetic sidekick-hood, or psychotic vengeance on the cheerleaders (non sympathetic villain).

No HTGYG today! Sorry!

Hi everyone!

I have been trying to stay on a regular schedule, but today I woke up hoarse and sounding rather like a frog. So I will put out a new episode as soon as my voice comes back!
