Happy Independence Day to the U.S.! I hope folks had a great holiday weekend! We have a number of great voicemails from Tim, highlighting Darcy’s awesome reviews here on the blog, and reinforcing my discussion on recycling and reusing stuff! Then Lizzie calls in to tell us about her babysitting gig and how the parents are cool Brits who let their kids watch old Dr. Who! Then Tim gets me going again on role-playing online, so I gush about DDO again.  Finally, I pipe up about our love of Steam for downloading PC games, and Wyatt calls in about GameStop for console games. I hope you guys love the mailbag stuff! I’ll be back next week with another topic after my week at my folks’ home down on the farm.

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at 206-202-7309   and leave your thoughts. You can also visit our forum at the Farpoint Forums. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at SusietheGeek or the show at HowToGrowGeek!

    I’ve just discovered this podcast!

As the father of a 6 month old, and as a proud life-long geek, becoming part of a geeky-parenting online community is high on my list of things to do.

After listening to this episode, and only this episode, I have a couple of concerns. Advertising and proselytizing are two things I don’t have a lot tolerance for. My wife and I are both vocal atheists (we both grew up in Christian communities — but we’ve both read the Bible and decided that it is a fairy-tale). Does the promo for the “Christian missionaries to the geek community” speak for the community behind this podcast, or are they just
another voice in the din? Also, a big portion of the podcast was devoted to a guy who was gushing about how GameStop is. I enjoy video game stores as much as the next guy, but is shilling for GameStop what this podcast is about?

I apologize for the confrontational questions. I’m just trying to figure out if this community is a good match for my family’s values, as directly as possible.

BTW, the first geeky project that I remember doing with my dad was a telegraph built out of wire, sheet metal, nails, and a 6v lantern battery. We built our own electromagnet from a ferrous nail and a coil of wire. He built most of it (I was only 4), but by the end of the project, I understood how it worked, and I still use what I learned at work, 25 years later. It was good fun! :-)

    Thanks,
    -Anonymous

I agree that it is a good idea to listen to a couple of episodes before making up your mind. Take a look here and find some that look interesting.
Wyatt often calls with things that are interesting to him and other gamers, and this time it was GameStop’s sales.
I agree that we are geeky and open-minded people here, and cover a lot of topics. You might find some you’ll like, if you look.

Thank you — I’ll keep listening!

I normally do listen to more episodes before deciding if I like a podcast, as you can imagine, a 6-month-old and a full-time+ job keep a guy pretty busy! Also, geeky parenting is pretty close to my heart at the moment, so I decided to ask, rather than to guess about these things. :-)

    Thanks,

    Hi,
The advertisment is for a chritian show that is a part of Farpoint media. Which Susie’s show is a part of too. I and my family are all christians, but we go by letting people believe or not believe as they choose. Everyone has that right.
Sorry if you don’t like hearing christian views, ect. Can’t change who I am, speaking personally here. But Susie has a great podcast and will worth listening too. Maybe you can find it in your heart to look past what you don’t like and take away good information and just enjoy it for what it is. It’s a big world, we all got a place in it. Be boring if we were all the same.

    :)

    Darcy
