HTGYG Show #154: Special Episode: Grieving and Loss – Remembering my Grandmother

This episode is a special remembrance of my grandmother, Era Mae Lett, and details how I’m feeling about her loss, how I’m handling it with my kids, and just my difficulties with having to handle loss and grief. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to listen – it was very cathartic for me to discuss my emotions.

HTGYG Show #151: Nerdy with Children? Here’s a site for you!

logo

This episode, I’ve got a great interview with David Gorcey and Nick Veneris from  Nerdy with Children, a cool website where you can find all kinds of great nerdy/geeky items for your kids and family, and a great forum for parents. They spend 10+ hours a day finding the cool stuff on the web just for us nerdy parents, so we can spend more time with our kids!

Also, check out the great post here by our contributor Laith Preston about the Comet Pan-STARRS, a very cool astronomical event happening RIGHT NOW (March 11-13)! You can take your kids outside and view this comet with the naked eye, so check out how!

HTGYG Show #148: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 13: Self-expression!

Mic--Headphones-psd61215

I’ve been recommending a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, this is your baker’s dozen bonus! And for this last entry in our gift guide, I go a little outside the box and discuss ways that you can give your child the gift of being able to express themselves.

Help your child by finding the way that they want to express themselves, be it art, music, writing, movie-making or podcasting! Give them the simple tools and let them be creative! Be it crayons and paper or Garageband and a microphone, help your child find out how they want to express themselves, and give them the outlet for that creativity!

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at @SusietheGeek or the show at @HowToGrowGeek, on Goodreads as SusieMurph, and on Google+ as +SusieMurph!

HTGYG Show #147: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 12: Cookbooks for Kids!

51EuZq65s5L._SS400_

I’m recommending a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Today’s entry is a great item to get for you to use with your child – kids’ cookbooks! Cooking is fun and educational, and teaching your children how to use recipes and make basic dishes is a good way to spend time together! I’m listing Emeril Lagasse’s There’s a Chef in My Soup and Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes by Mollie Katzen and Anne Henderson here, but there are lots more great kids’ cookbooks out there. Here are two lists of recommendations – one from Grandparents.com and one from About.com for you to check out as well!

Today’s entry is one of our favorite card games to play as a family – Munchkin! HTGYG Show #145: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 10: Bug Catchers!

31KdBc4rmeL

I’m recommending a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Gary called in with the great recommendation of Bug Catchers! These are great little cages that you can catch and observe bugs in, and I’m adding a bug vacuum to the list as well – these make learning about insects and small animals fun and easy! Here’s a great link to Squidoo describing the benefits of bug catching!
