The Diamond Of Darkhold – By Jeanne Duprau

From the book: “It’s been several months since Lina and Doon escaped the dying city of Ember and, along with the rest of their people, joined the town of sparks. Lina knows they are lucky to be there, but life aboveground is hard. Instead of opening a can for dinner, they must plant and harvest their food. A rumor of dragons—— by Michael A. Heald

A book review by Darcy Anna Low.

A dragon that swims instead of flying. A prince with no hands. A wizard with a sword. A girl with a strange ability to talk to animals, or “senses” their feelings. They all work together to try to foil the evil plans of a great dark dragon, using their abilities to help themselves and each other. An adventure, a romance, a mystery… this book really made me not want to put it down. It was exciting and you really wanted to know what happened next.
I loved how Micheal A. Heald kept the book going. It was very hard to put down, but its volume of pages often forced me to. It is a long book, but you really don’t mind too much. Just hate when you got to stop to go eat, do homework or take out the trash. His introduction is wonderful, a party for the youngest prince coming of age. That immediately told me the prince was not a normal one. The protagonist’s nature is to go looking for trouble, so it was easy to slide from a castle to a slime-dripping cave. Heald’s descriptions of the land and the characters were wonderful, only revealing certain things about the characters’ appearances when the information was related to something in the plot. His writing style shows an adventure with plenty of description, which I was pleased to find. I cannot wait for the next book in his series!

oh! this book is part of a series, so you should know it ends in a cliff hanger. That is not a spoiler either, you can tell it’s coming. This just makes you want to get the next one, hehe. pretty sneaky huh?

This is one of the best books I have read, and i recomend it to anybody. be sure to get the whole series, you will be glad you did.

Review by Darcy Low
My best friend Ashley got this book out of our school library and said I soooooooo had to read it. I took it and looked at it and it was like the littlest book I ever seen! But we like same books so I took it home and wow, she was right!!
The story is all about these three kids, Mallory, Simon and Jared. Who are brothers and sister and move into the old run down house after their father leaves their mom. Mallory is the oldest, she is kinda like me, a tomboy dad calls it. She likes fencing and sports, Simon is the next oldest; he collects insects and loves animals. He is the most happiest about moving because now he can have more room for his pets. (and more pets!) Jared is the youngest, he is the most shy and tends to read and be by himself more. He also got into trouble at his old school, but it sounds to me like it wasn’t his fault.

Book Review by Darcy Anna Low

From the back of the book:

Citizens of Ember shall be assigned work at twelve years of age. Lina Mayfleet desperately wants to be a messenger. Instead, she draws the dreaded job of Pipeworks laborer, which means she’ll be working in damp tunnels deep underground.

Doon Harrow draws messenger, and asks Lina to trade! Doon wants to be underground. That;s where the generator is, and Doon has ideas on how to fix it. For as long as anyone can remember, the great lights of Ember have kept the endless darkness at bay. But now the lights are beginning to flicker……

Have you ever read a book that is SO good, that you can’t wait to read the next one? That’s this book. It’s the best book I have read so far! The City of Ember is far underground. Which I thought, wow this be really cool to read about. The city itself is falling apart. Things are breaking down and the supplies are running out. But no one knows why things are breaking, or what to do about it. So everyone in the city has started making due, with trading with each other, and keeping everything from string, to paper off of cans to use for writing.
