HTGYG Show #156: Summer Catchup – Exercise, Weight Loss, End of Summer Book List!

IMG_0238

IMG_0238Hi everyone! It’s been a while since we’ve had a show, but we’ve had a busy summer! In this episode, I talk about our efforts to exercise more, eat less, and relax a lot after the craziness of swim team in June.

RapidEye calls in to talk about his family’s practice of running for exercise.

We also had a family vacation that was very relaxing and fun, with some time away from the Internet.

Finally, I’ve got a list of books that will be having movie versions out soon for your kids and teens to catch up on – Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, Divergent, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and The Mortal Instruments. We’ll have more on them later this fall.

HTGYG Show #151: Nerdy with Children? Here’s a site for you!

logo

This episode, I’ve got a great interview with David Gorcey and Nick Veneris from  Nerdy with Children, a cool website where you can find all kinds of great nerdy/geeky items for your kids and family, and a great forum for parents. They spend 10+ hours a day finding the cool stuff on the web just for us nerdy parents, so we can spend more time with our kids!

Also, check out the great post here by our contributor Laith Preston about the Comet Pan-STARRS, a very cool astronomical event happening RIGHT NOW (March 11-13)! You can take your kids outside and view this comet with the naked eye, so check out how!

HTGYG Show #84: Bullying: What Can We Do?

This episode, I wanted to tackle a topic that is very prominent in the media, with the recent suicides of 6 teens bullied for being gay. Bullying of one kind or another is an issue that most of our kids have to deal with. I talk about ignoring and bullying, and some things we can do as parents to help our kids handle bullying, and some warning signs for us all to watch out for in our kids and teens.

Please pass on the hotline for helping bullied LGBT and questioning teens – 866-4-U-TREVOR.

Finally, Wyatt calls in with a discussion of motion control platforms in gaming, a commentary on  Army Men, and a comment on Bioshock.

Amanda was a little sick as I produced this episode, so since we had sort of a disease theme going here,  we finish up with a song by MC Frontalot featuring Jonathan Coulton called “Diseases of Yore.” The video is from their live performance at PAX. You can download this song and many of his other Nerdcore offerings free at his site!
