It’s that time of year again – science fair projects, stomach viruses, field trips and chaos! Apologies for the sound being off, but I wanted to get this out to you! This episode, I talk about our adventures finishing up the school assignments before the holiday break and the fun the kids had singing at various locations. I also talk about what I think is the biggest space news story of the year – Europa’s showers of water.

As promised, here’s the pic and link of the Mythbusters Science Fair Book – here’s #2, but we have both editions.

HTGYG Show #156: Summer Catchup – Exercise, Weight Loss, End of Summer Book List!

IMG_0238

IMG_0238Hi everyone! It’s been a while since we’ve had a show, but we’ve had a busy summer! In this episode, I talk about our efforts to exercise more, eat less, and relax a lot after the craziness of swim team in June.

RapidEye calls in to talk about his family’s practice of running for exercise.

We also had a family vacation that was very relaxing and fun, with some time away from the Internet.

Finally, I’ve got a list of books that will be having movie versions out soon for your kids and teens to catch up on – Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, Divergent, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and The Mortal Instruments. We’ll have more on them later this fall.

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at @SusietheGeek or the show at @HowToGrowGeek, on Goodreads as SusieMurph, on Pinterest as SusietheGeek and on Google+ as +SusieMurph!

HTGYG Show #151: Nerdy with Children? Here’s a site for you!

logo

This episode, I’ve got a great interview with David Gorcey and Nick Veneris from  Nerdy with Children, a cool website where you can find all kinds of great nerdy/geeky items for your kids and family, and a great forum for parents. They spend 10+ hours a day finding the cool stuff on the web just for us nerdy parents, so we can spend more time with our kids!

Also, check out the great post here by our contributor Laith Preston about the Comet Pan-STARRS, a very cool astronomical event happening RIGHT NOW (March 11-13)! You can take your kids outside and view this comet with the naked eye, so check out how!

HTGYG Show #147: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 12: Cookbooks for Kids!

51EuZq65s5L._SS400_

I’m recommending a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Today’s entry is a great item to get for you to use with your child – kids’ cookbooks! Cooking is fun and educational, and teaching your children how to use recipes and make basic dishes is a good way to spend time together! I’m listing Emeril Lagasse’s There’s a Chef in My Soup and Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes by Mollie Katzen and Anne Henderson here, but there are lots more great kids’ cookbooks out there. Here are two lists of recommendations – one from Grandparents.com and one from About.com for you to check out as well!

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at @SusietheGeek or the show at @HowToGrowGeek, on Goodreads as SusieMurph, and on Google+ as +SusieMurph!

HTGYG Show #144: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 9: Star Wars books for all ages!

I’m making up for no shows in November by giving you a 12 Days of Christmas Geeky Gift Guide! I’ll recommend a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Today’s idea was inspired by a discussion author Cory Doctorow had on Twitter about what to get his 6 yr old nephew who’s a big Star Wars fan. He settled on this Star Wars Complete Cross-Section book, which inspired me to want to introduce you all to the world of gorgeous books out there for the ultimate Star Wars fans on any age! Just search for Star Wars books anywhere you’d shop for books or geeky goodness, and revel in the tons of gorgeous books available!

HTGYG Show #128: World Book Night and Kevin’s Favorite Books!

Star Wars Omnibus:Boba Fett & The Wrath of Darth Maul

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages

This episode, we celebrate World Book Night, and welcome new members to our HTGYG team – Laith Preston and his daughters. Laith does a lot of reviewing over at The Dragon Page, and they’ll be joining us to review kids’ books! They call in to tell us about their experience handing out copies of Ender’s Game to random folks for World Book Night.

Then, my son Kevin entertains us with reviews of some of his favorite books: the manga books The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages; the kids’ novel Nathaniel Fludd, Beastologist Book One:Flight of the Phoenix, the young adult novel Star Wars:The Wrath of Darth Maul, and the graphic novel Star Wars Omnibus: Boba Fett. Then he discusses how Ender’s Game is a book he’s started but hasn’t finished yet – he thinks that he should be older to understand the story better. We’re also looking forward to the movie version slated to come out next year.
