It’s that time of year again – science fair projects, stomach viruses, field trips and chaos! Apologies for the sound being off, but I wanted to get this out to you! This episode, I talk about our adventures finishing up the school assignments before the holiday break and the fun the kids had singing at various locations. I also talk about what I think is the biggest space news story of the year – Europa’s showers of water.

As promised, here’s the pic and link of the Mythbusters Science Fair Book – here’s #2, but we have both editions.

HTGYG Show #149: Flu, Vaccinations, and Gearing up for #150!

Happy New Year, and welcome back! We discuss the current flu epidemic and what you and your family can do about it – here’s the CDC’s Flu Info site. We also discuss vaccinations and why they’re important. We’re reviewing this subject in light of this article from Ben Goldacre about antivax parents changing their opinions after their child contracts a deadly but preventable disease. We hope this child has a speedy and major recovery!

Also, I’m excited to be gearing up for HTGYG’s 150th episode! Please send in your comments and well wishes – I’d love to hear from all of you! Please email or call by Feb. 1, and I’ll put you in the show! Thanks so much to everyone for listening and support!

HTGYG Show #148: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 13: Self-expression!

Mic--Headphones-psd61215

I’ve been recommending a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, this is your baker’s dozen bonus! And for this last entry in our gift guide, I go a little outside the box and discuss ways that you can give your child the gift of being able to express themselves.

Help your child by finding the way that they want to express themselves, be it art, music, writing, movie-making or podcasting! Give them the simple tools and let them be creative! Be it crayons and paper or Garageband and a microphone, help your child find out how they want to express themselves, and give them the outlet for that creativity!

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at @SusietheGeek or the show at @HowToGrowGeek, on Goodreads as SusieMurph, and on Google+ as +SusieMurph!

HTGYG Show #145: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 10: Bug Catchers!

31KdBc4rmeL

I’m recommending a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Gary called in with the great recommendation of Bug Catchers! These are great little cages that you can catch and observe bugs in, and I’m adding a bug vacuum to the list as well – these make learning about insects and small animals fun and easy! Here’s a great link to Squidoo describing the benefits of bug catching!

HTGYG Show #139: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 4: Lego Advent Calendars!

Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar

I’m making up for no shows in November by giving you a 12 Days of Christmas Geeky Gift Guide! I’ll recommend a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Today’s gift idea comes from our good friend Gary – Lego Advent Calendars! They are a great way to keep the kids from going nuts waiting until Christmas, and are a great replacement for candy-filled Advent Calendars! Thanks Gary!

Also, please visit these wonderful Video Advent Calendars online – Grant’s Advent Calendar and Olivia’s Advent Calendar. They’re both posting short, fun videos each day until Christmas! A big Happy Holidays to both of these friends of ours, and hopefully we’ll see them again at the Parsecs next year!

HTGYG Show #135: Voicemails from Gary! Kids, Conventions & More!

Hey everyone! I’ve been sick for a few weeks with throat issues, so I’ve not been able to put out a show, but luckily Gary’s been calling in with voicemails on the last few shows! Here I’ve put together his thoughts on taking kids to conventions, plus a few other topics we’ve covered. Thanks a million, Gary! Don’t forget – we’d love to hear from you too – especially if this throat issue keeps bugging me!

HTGYG Show #133: Interview with Will Bowles & Josh Flaum from “Written By A Kid!”

We’re returning from our summer hiatus with a wonderful interview with the creators and producers of the YouTube show “Written By A Kid,” Will Bowles and Josh Flaum. These talented guys have created a fantastic show where kids tell their stories, and directors make that story into a mini-movie. This is one of the first season of shows available on Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry channel on YouTube. You can find the show here on YouTube, and the community here on the Geek & Sundry website.

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at SusietheGeek or the show at HowToGrowGeek, on Goodreads as SusieMurph, and on Google+ as +SusieMurph!
