HTGYG Show #140: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 5: Nancy Drew Video Games!

box

I’m making up for no shows in November by giving you a 12 Days of Christmas Geeky Gift Guide! I’ll recommend a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I started a day early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

Today, I’ve got my daughter Amanda here to tell you about one of her favorite things, the Nancy Drew video games produced by HerInteractive. There are already 27 titles in the series, but you can start anywhere! They’re almost all available for Windows and Mac systems, and they’re each $20 or less, depending on whether you want to download them or get a physical boxed copy. These have been great for teaching Amanda to flex her mental mystery-solving muscles!

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at @SusietheGeek or the show at @HowToGrowGeek, on Goodreads as SusieMurph, and on Google+ as +SusieMurph!

HTGYG Show #136: Twelve Days of Christmas Day 1: Skylanders!

Skylanders_Giants_(Wii)_(NA)

Here at HTGYG, I decided that since I didn’t record any shows during November due to scheduling, I’d make it up to you all by giving you a 12 Days of Christmas Geeky Gift Guide! I’ll recommend a great geeky gift for your kids for the first 12 days of Christmas, and since I’m starting early, it’ll actually be a baker’s dozen of 13! (If you have recommendations, please send them to me at howtogrowyourgeek@gmail.com or @susiethegeek on Twitter!)

I’m starting with a big one – the Skylanders Giants video game. This game is wonderful for the whole family, and you collect figures that give you additional characters with different abilities to use in the game. You can check out a great review here at Wired’s GeekMom.

HTGYG Show #129: Ticket to Ride, Table Top and Geography Lessons!

61dDQUfhuvL._SL500_AA300_

This week, I talk about Geography, and fun ways for you kids to brush up on their lessons while having fun this summer! I mention great board games like Ticket to Ride, (which I also point out is on my new favorite game show Table Top, hosted by Wil Wheaton on Felicia Day’s new Youtube channel Geek & Sundry), Pandemic and the great classic video game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

Want to use Zombies to teach geography? Check out this Kickstarter to create a curriculum for middle school kids that does just that! I think I might just back this one too!

We also have a voicemail about sleep-away camps from Gary, and a BIG shoutout to Paul, our listener in Malta – use your geography skills and find it on a world map!

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek-at-gmail-dot-com, or call my voicemail number at (678) 235-GROW (4769) and leave your thoughts. And last but not least, you can follow me on Twitter at SusietheGeek or the show at HowToGrowGeek, or on Goodreads as SusietheGeek!

HTGYG Show #77: Voicemails – Recycling and Gaming

Happy Independence Day to the U.S.! I hope folks had a great holiday weekend! We have a number of great voicemails from Tim, highlighting Darcy’s awesome reviews here on the blog, and reinforcing my discussion on recycling and reusing stuff! Then Lizzie calls in to tell us about her babysitting gig and how the parents are cool Brits who let their kids watch old Dr. Who! Then Tim gets me going again on role-playing online, so I gush about DDO again.  Finally, I pipe up about our love of Steam for downloading PC games, and Wyatt calls in about GameStop for console games. I hope you guys love the mailbag stuff! I’ll be back next week with another topic after my week at my folks’ home down on the farm.

HTGYG Show #75: Wyatt tackles new games, Xbox Live, and what game franchises need to take a flying leap!

Due to a busy week at our house, and good timing from him with a couple of great long voicemails, I’m going to let  Wyatt have a special long version of his Xbox Live and gaming reviews on the show, this week. He discusses a lot of new games and releases, gives his opinions on some great Vietnam-era gameplay, and then gives a great rant on which game franchises need to take a break or just die. Feel free to share your opinions on this – you may love these games and hate others! Please send Wyatt some feedback, and look him up on Xbox Live – his gamertag is Astrozombie1222 – see the pics below! Then we have a voicemail from Doug in Alaska about a great indie game!

Next week, I am going to tackle how to discuss the BP oil spill in the Gulf with your kids, and what things that we all can do to help a little bit.  Send me your recommendations, advice or questions please, because this isn’t an easy subject to tackle!

HTGYG Show #72: What Are Kids Good For, Anyway?

So, what are kids good for, anyway? This week, I attempt to answer that question in snarky, serious, and funny ways.  It is getting a little hectic around here with the end of the school year, so I am both venting a little and reminding us all that kids are really great. Gary helps with several voicemails adding what he thinks as well. Then Wyatt has a little rant of his own, discussing the less-than-good quality of most little kid games and movie-tie-in games.

Please email me with your own comments at howtogrowyourgeek – at-gmail -dot-com, or call my voicemail number at 206-202-7309  and leave your thoughts.
